Worst Customer Service! – TataIndicom

Customer service is a word that is gaining lot of importance these days. There are companies which are very good at it, some are fine and some are notorious for bad service.

Historically , we associated public sector companies, like postal service, bsnl, banks with bad customer service. But there is one private company that , I personally recommend , as the one with the worst ever customer service ever. I am talking about TataIndicom Wimax internet service.

I have lived in different parts of India, and have spent close to 4.5 years in USA and have even lived in Germany for about 3 months. So I know a thing or two about customer service.

I have been a customer of TataIndicom internet service since 2004 for a year. It was definitely bad service then. Then I moved to Banashankari in south Bangalore ,2.5 years back and recently got a land line internet from TataIndicom. In a month it would be down periodically for 2-3 weeks. Each time, it was down, I would call customer service and they would run me through a procedure. If it did not work, they would promise to send someone in a day or two. And this someone may or may not turn up. If he does it is always after a few days.

And then a few months , TataIndicom said they are converting to Wimax service at no cost, and this service is very reliable. Well it took a couple of weeks for them to make it working . And then the service worked for 2 weeks without issues. Then the trouble started. This one proved to be a same as the landline.

The service would be down randomly, and each time i called the customer service, they would put me through the ritual of

  • unplugging the cable and replugging
  • rebooting the computer
  • powering up the modem
  • checking their signal strength

Each time this procedure was performed, it took me almost 30 mins. And eventually i found that i was calling them each day, and they were asking me to go through this procedure. And the at the end of it, the internet may or may not work. And I found that just to check my emails for 10 mins, i had to call TataIndicom for 30 mins. And i felt like a idiot, because, obviously their internet is not working, it could be due to anything – bad signal strength, too many connections in the neighborhood etc, and I am on call with Tata each day

Until today i have counted close to 30 calls or so to them aggregating probably around 15 hours of my time spent.

I lost my temper one day and just vented my frustration at the support guy and hung up the phone.

If you have other choices in your area for internet, please do NOT ever ever sign up for TataIndicom , it is one of the worst companies in the world. They have shoddy customer service, very very unreponsive, and they cannot fix their technical issues. And your internet will be probably down 50 % of the time.

It is possible, TataIndicom customers in other areas may have slightly better experience, but most of my friends tell me it is the same shoddiness in general.
